The name of Gunung Bromo or Mount Bromo is derived from Javanese pronounciation of Brahma, the Hindu creator God. For Tenggerese (Indigenous tribe Probolinggo people) Bromo is a holy place. Once a year they sacrifice livestock for the mountain of God by throwing them into the caldera of volcano.
Bromo has the unique characteristic, located in the vast plain called sea sand. The best timing to enjoy Mount Bromo and the surrounding area are at the sunrise time, and you can hike to the top of the Penanjakan to get the best scenery view.
